VEL(velocity) and DYN(dynamics) on Vocaloid editor are slightly different from those of ordinary DTM.
Vocaloid editor also has unique ones like BRE(breathiness), BRI(brightness), CLE(clearness), OPE(opening), GEN(gender factor) and POR(portamento timing).

Today choro asks the award-winning mixing engineer Sho Uehara what the Vocaloid editor is all about.

Hello, Sho!
Today I ask you everything about Vocaloid editing.

Please explain the unique parameters one by one.

001

VOCALOID3 has parameters like VEL, DYN, BRE, BRI, CLE, OPE, GEN, POR, PIT.

▲Default Parameter

Here are parameter minimum and parameter maximum.

▼Parameter Minimum
002

▼Parameter Maxmum

VEL(velocity)
Velocity affects consonant duration. Lower velocity results in longer consonants and higher results in shorter.

▲VEL Minimum

▲VEL Maximum

Sho Uehara

Well, it's a little bit difficult for an engineer to imitate it.

It's easy to make a long tune short, but the other way is difficult.
There is a function that's called Time-stretching, but it makes the tone unnatural.

I think the length of tones should be adjusted by Vocaloid software.

BRE(breathiness)
Breathiness controls the amount of the voice’s breathing. Higher values add more breath to the voice.

▲BRE Maximum(The Default is Minimum)

03
Sho Uehara

This parameter requires a special plug-in.

As far as I know, A VOX from Antares Audio Technologies should be the one.
And unfortunately I don't have it.

BRI (brightness)

Brightness changes the voice. The higher the value, the brighter the sound.

▲BRI Minimum

▲BRI Maximum

03
Sho Uehara

This is more like raising mid range with EQ.

I think the balance is good at the Maximum.
High parameter value would be preferable.

This is what we engineers can also do.

CLE(clearness)
Clearness makes the voice clear. The higher the value the sharper the voice.

▲CLE Maximum(The Default is Minimum)

03
Sho Uehara

This is more like raising high range with EQ.
But we usually keep the "s" sound lower in the high range.
So, low parameter value would be preferable.

OPE(Opening)
Opening adjusts opening of the mouth. The higher the value, the clear, more open tone.

▲OPE Minimum(The Default is Maximum)

03
Sho Uehara

This is something to do with the variation of pronunciation, which we engineers can not do much with.

I think the default maximum value is preferable.
The minimum value is too mute.

GEN(Gender Factor)
It modifies the structure of the voice. It alters "masculinity" or "femininity."

▲GEN Minimum

▲GEN Maximum

03
Sho Uehara

This changes the structure of the voice totally.

If an engineer tries to do it, a voice-changing plug-in would be needed.

02

POR(Portamento Timing)

Portamento timing adjusts starting position of the portamento, the pitch sliding between two notes.

▲POR Minimum

▲POR Maximum

03
Sho Uehara

We can do the same thing with a Auto-Tune that can correct the pitch. But Auto-Tune is mainly for correction, not for changing the nuance.

Thanks a lot, Sho!

For this project, I asked you to edit the voice of  Vocaloid, because, I thought you a mixing engineer could handle it much better than I.

Do you see anything that only Vocaloid software can do and mixing engineers can not do?

After Vocaloid editing↓↓

03
Sho Uehara

What an engineer can do is giving nuance to the voice, adjusting, making sound clear...that's about it.

We can't change the character of the voice.
choro's song can not be edited and changed to be Sho's song.
That's what Vocaloid software should do.

OK!

Next time, I will ask you about all of your technique to make a Vocaloid sound like human.
